Why won't my PC join the AP's SSID in the lab when the WPA2 password is one char off?

I dropped an AP on the canvas, set its SSID to LabWiFi and WPA2-PSK to Networking123, then added a PC as a wireless station. When I type the passphrase exactly it associates fine and I can ping the gateway. But if I mistype even one character of the PSK, or put the SSID in the wrong case (labwifi), the station just never joins — no error that says "wrong password", it just sits there unassociated.

Why does a single wrong character make the whole thing fail silently? Is the SSID part of the password check somehow, or are those two separate things? Trying to build the right mental model here. 🙏

The key insight: with WPA2-PSK the passphrase alone isn't the secret — **the SSID is baked into the key**. The Pairwise Master Key is derived as:

The SSID is literally the salt. So `Networking123` on `LabWiFi` and the *same* passphrase on `labwifi` produce two completely different PMKs. That's why case matters on the SSID too — it's not a string compare, it's fed into the hash.

Nothing actually transmits the PSK. Association happens first (open auth + assoc request/response), and only *then* does the 4-way handshake run to prove both sides hold the same PMK:

- **M1**: AP → station, ANonce
- **M2**: station → AP, SNonce + a MIC
- The AP recomputes the PTK from PMK+nonces+MACs and checks the MIC on M2

If your passphrase or SSID is off by one character, the station's PMK differs, the PTK differs, and the **MIC on M2 fails**. The AP can't tell "wrong password" apart from "corrupted frame" — it just drops it and eventually deauthenticates. Hence the silent failure you're seeing.

In the lab: run the join, then watch the RF animation — you'll see it associate (that part always succeeds) and then stall on the handshake. Fix the SSID case and PSK exactly and M2's MIC validates, PTK installs, traffic flows.

Adding a troubleshooting angle on top of ben's explanation — when a station "won't join," split it into two stages and check them in order:

1. **Association** — does the station even find and associate to the SSID? If the SSID string doesn't match at all, it never associates (it's looking for a network that, to it, doesn't exist). Confirm the SSID matches exactly, case included.
2. **Authentication / 4-way handshake** — if it associates but drops right after, that's almost always a PSK mismatch failing the MIC check.

So the quick mental test: *associated then kicked = bad PSK; never associated = bad SSID.* That one distinction tells you which field to fix.
