Area-by-area review
One pass through the seven topic areas of the Final Weighted Exam, in course order: the facts to know cold in each area, the one output that decides most of its questions, and the misconceptions that cost the most marks.
What you'll learn
- State the key facts of each of the seven topic areas without looking them up.
- Read the decisive output for each area and name the line that answers the question.
- Recognise and correct the most common misconceptions in each area.
- Use the area scores on your results page to decide what to revise next.
How to use this review
The Final Weighted Exam draws its 60 questions from seven topic areas, one for each teaching module. This chapter walks through them in course order. It teaches nothing new: every fact here was taught, with its reasons, in a chapter of Modules 1 to 7. What it adds is the short list you should be able to recite, and the output you should be able to read, before you start the exam.
Each area gets one section with three parts. The list holds the facts to know cold. The exhibit is the output that decides most questions in that area, and the paragraphs before it name the line to read first. The callout names three misconceptions that cost marks. If a fact in the list surprises you, stop and reread the chapter it comes from before you go on.
Work through it actively. Cover each list and say the facts aloud before you read them. Look at each exhibit and decide what it shows before you read what the paragraphs say about it.
The seven areas and their weights
Each area is weighted by how much of the course teaches it, and a paper gives every area its share of the 60 questions. Building the LAN is the largest area and Automating the Network the smallest. The table shows how many questions each area gets on a paper, and how many of them you must get right to clear that area's floor.
Passing takes two things at once: 70% of the paper overall, which is 42 of 60, and at least one third right in every area. One third of 9 is 3; for 8 questions it is still 3, because 2 is less than a third of 8. A strong score in the areas you enjoy cannot carry an area you skipped.
| Area | Module | Weight | Questions on a paper | Right answers the floor needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How Networks Work | 1 | 14% | 9 | 3 |
| Addresses and Subnets | 2 | 14% | 8 | 3 |
| Routing Between Networks | 3 | 15% | 9 | 3 |
| Building the LAN | 4 | 20% | 12 | 4 |
| Running the Network | 5 | 14% | 8 | 3 |
| Securing the Network | 6 | 13% | 8 | 3 |
| Automating the Network | 7 | 10% | 6 | 2 |
